La storia della cittą

First historical knowledge go back to the 300's b.C. for the siege brought to the city by the Romans, whom victorious changed it into a colony naming it "Narnia". In 209 b.C., Narni refussed to Rome to send soldiers and money to combat the Carthaginian for this it was destroyed for the first time. In its troubled history, Narni, was destroyed several times, but was always rebuild in the same locality. In barbarian epoch it suffers the events of the Greek-gothic war and the plunder of Totila. Guastaldo Lombardo, Narni embraced the cause of Ottone Ist from Saxon for the mediation of its bishop, by now pope, Giovanni XVIIth. Belonged for a short time to the Countess Matilde, once more part of the Dominious of the Church in 726. From the Xlth century it began to increase in wealth and power, opposed to Pope Pasquale IInd in 1112 Rose against Barbarossa in 1167. The insubordination cost them a ferocious repression imposed by the archbishop Cristiano from Mainz, Chancellor of Barbarossa. In 1242, Narni being prevalently tied to the guelfic fraction, enters into an alliance with Perugia and Rome against the Empire. In the following century it was included in the reconquest, by the cardinal Albornoz, of the papal patrimony. It was enfeoffed to the Orsini in 1373 to whom it returns in 1409. Occupied by Ladislao, King of Sicily in the XVth century, to be soon again, reabsorbed by the church, thanks to Braccio da Montone. The 15th july 1525 marked a decisive turning-point of Narni's history. The troops of Carlo Vth, compound by deadly spanish undisciplined soldiery and by the german Lanzichenecchi, they put the city on fire and sword, which lost like this all of its ancient prosperity. Even the Ternanis took advantage of the situation to deliver their blame to give vent over the Narnesis a odium repressed for a long time. Its reconstruction gives it a physiognomy characteristic of the pontitex cities from the 600's to 700's. It enters to be part of the Roman Republic in 1789. In 1831 it joins the revolt against Gregorio XVIth and was annexed to the Italian Kingdom in 1860.
