La storia della cittą

Rose with the subdivision of the Commune of Baschi, in the Xlth century it was fortified with a popular castle by the Normanni in fight against Spoleto. The discovery of the necropolis of Montecchio, denominated Fosso San Lorezno and also including the commune of Baschi, give first testimony of settelments on this territory. Flourishing centre between the Vl and Vth century, decayed around the IVth century b.C. with Todi's affirmation . The first nucleus of the castle "Castro Monticoli" had been build by the Chiaravalle in 1165. Successively, it was strengthened and enlarged with a second limitmark of walls. Montecchio is interesting for its position, was contended between Todi and Orvieto. With the XIVth century the decline of Todi began, it lost the supremacy over the territory with the consequent entrance in the scene of Alviano and Orvieto. In 1497 it was plundered by the troops of Alessandro VIth, led by Matteo da Canale. Autonomous commune before the XIXth century, then Montecchio remained a fraction of Baschi until 1948.
