Its name derives from "Wald" which means wood and to which Cattaneo was added, name of its founder, count Edoardo Cattaneo emperor's vassal Ottone llnd from Saxon. From ancient origins, Gualdo Cattaneo, in the Middle-age, had been part of the dukedom of Spoleto, which had it fenced with walls and fortified with towers. Arises in 975 with the foundation of the castle of Gualdo and its donation to the family Cattaneo. From very important historical meaning for its dominant and strategic position in the Tiber and Spoletina valleys. In fight against Foligno allied to Spoleto, it had alternate vicissitudes. In 1493, Pope Alessandro VIth Borgia gave it in administration to Foligno, which wanting to strengthen its defences, had a fortress build |
