From probable roman origins, Deruta was under Perugian domination since the XI century to wich it remains almost always faithful, following common events. It was fortified in the XII century ceramic - working was introduced. Besieged by Braccio of Montone in 1408, heavily damaged in the 1500's by Cesare Borgia and plundered by Braccio Baglioni. During the "Salt War" between Perugia and Pio II, Deruta sided for the Pope, obtaining like this exemption of the taxes. Deruta arises on a hillock and is an important agricoltural centre rich of industrial arts and crafts manufacturing. Ancient tradition have here the artistical-ceramics industry wich go back to yhe 500's. |
