Arises not long after the 1300's, the castle was build around a tower build by Benedictine monks which used it for working. Under the family Monaldeschi's domination, Castel Viscardo with its small but strong army, took part on the Lepanto's battle and succeded in wrenching a flag from the pennon of a Turkish ship. This trophy, twenty metres long, was carrying a half moon of massive silver on the flag-staff, it was brought to Castel Viscardo. Very important for Castel Viscardo the family of the princes Spada who governed, after the Monaldeschi della Cervara and the Vasalli, until 1921. During the Roman Republic, Castel Viscardo was united to Orvieto's canton whilst it entered in the United Italy in 1860, it was erected to a autonomous commune, to which the suppressed commune of Monterubiaglio was aggregated in 1879. In 1927, with the formation of the Province of Terni it was assigned to this. |
