Etruscan origins, for its stategic position in the triangle of Volsini, Tarquinia and Populonia, it was tied to their alternate events. The hamlet developed around the castle which had been build in the second half of the XVth century by Prince Giorgio della Rovere in accordance with Pope Sisto IVth for the defence of the Papal States. The castle was destroyed by the neighbouring seigniory from Castlerubello and Porano, then it had been rebuild by Cardinal Sannesio and used as aestival seat of the Orvietani bishops. With the falling of the Roman empire, it suffers Westgothic, Ostrogothic and Longobar dic invasions. Often it had been refuge of famous brigands like Davide Biscarini from Marsciano and Luciano Fioravanti from Viterbo. |
