Founded with the name "Castrum Canarii", historically it appears in the beginning of the 200's. Cannara was built in 11 70, the ancient centre of the Umbrians, named by Rompani "Urvinum Hortense", was erected in the 1st century b.C. After Longobardic invasion, the population decided to move in the fertile plain of the Topino, where they founded the new centre with houses of clay and reeds. Valerio Ranieri took refuge and built the castle naming it "Cannaia" for the abundant reeds growing in this area. Fights, allied with Perugia, against Assisi in 1291. Falls into Baglione Baglioni's hands in 1340, but the pope's tropps restored order and in 1352 it became dominion of Spoleto's Dukedom. Becomes to be the fortress of the ferocious Brettoni soldiers and it was in this occasion that Urbano Vlth led them again to independence. Braccio Fortebraccio gave it to Malatesta Baglioni in 1424 and in 1648 it passed to the Papal States. Enters to be part of Vittorio Emanuele's IInd reign in 1860. |
