La storia della cittą

Ancient Trevi rose along the Flami nia road, exactly in the locality of Pietrarossa. Trevi had a difficult and troubled past, repeatedly destroyed, it was finally rebuild in heights to have a greater possibility of defences. Trevi is one of the most characteristic Umbrian towns, disposed on the last spur of Mount Pettino, in a panoramic position over a hill covered with olive-trees and dominating the Spoletina plain. Christianity was propagandized and widespread in that zone under the emperor Dioclezano, by the Martyr bishop Emiliano, drowned by the pagans in the Clitunno (302). Occupied by the Longobardics, Trevi was seat of stewardship and underwent devastations through the Saracens around 881 and the Hungarians in 915 and 924. It was united to Foligno by Pope Innocenzo IIIrd, entirely destroyed in 1214 and included in the Dukedom of Spoleto in 1241. In 1250 and 1264, some defence towers were build along the new walls, interrupted by eight gates. In the XIVth century, Trevi tried to get rid of the authority of Foligno and Spoleto, its possession was claimed by the Trinci from Foligno, also by Biordo Michelotti (1394) and later on by Francesco Sforza (1424) and Nicolò Piccinino. The Pope assigned it as vicar to the sons of Nicolò Maurizi from Tolentino, which kept it until 1440. With the government of the Church, Trevi was included in the legation of Perugia, in 1784, Pope Pio VIth gave Trevi the title of a city.
