Altough from Umbrian origins, the Romans called it "Hispellum" before, erected to a municipality (Ist century b.C.) obtains the right of a colony (Colobnia Julia Hispellum) with second triumvirate, after the war of Perugia which, in 41 b.C., see Ottaviano to take possession of that city faithful to Antonio, ravaging it. In imperial ages it becomes an important centre, also for its position and Augusto allowed the baths of the Clitunno (near Spoleto) and Civitella d'Arno (near Perugia), therefore he had it fortified and fenced with walls. At the beginning of the IVth century a.C., Costantino the Great, gave to Spello the name of Flavia Costans and granted various privileges among the one to erect a temple to Gens Flavia where the Umbrians and the Etruscans, by now confederated in the sacred associations, were able to celebrate their annual feast. With the fall of the Western Empire it suffers destiny of the rest of Italy. Damaged during the Gothic invasion, it was part of the Longobardic Dukedom from Spoleto and follwed its destiny until the end of the XIIth century, when it was subjected to the Church. Constituted in free commune, in the XIIIth century it sided in a first moment for the Emperor, then rebellious against Federico II who had it besieged and devastated. At the end of the century, Spello enters within the limits of Baglioni from Perugia, which dominated it among alternate events of other seigniorys. In 1583 it returns definitively to the Church States. This has been a favourable period for the city, which grew rich with some revival masterpieces. In the Roman period there has been an intense activity wether in arts as well as in literature. In the middleages, during the preaching of Saint Francis, the city had a moment of intense spiritual fervour. The Renaissance brought numerous artists and lettereds from other cities. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, Spello gave remarkable contribution to the literary academy of the Arcadia. Spello is seat of the "Academy of Constantinian Studies", at which the university of Perugia organizes international meetings of historic juridical character. |
