Ancient roman hamlet, famous for its waters. In the middelages the district was devastated by the Saracens, in 882 the hamlet, from the XIth to the XVth century it was alternatively possession of Narni and the Church. Enfeoffed in 1524 by Pope Clemente Vllth to the Orsini, suffers heavy devastation in 1527 by the troops of the high constable of Barbone bound to Rome. Elevated by Urbano VIIth to Dukedom in 1590 to favour the Orsini, it then belonged in the following century to the Publicola of Santacroce. In 1781 Pio VIth elevated San Gemini to the rank of a city. |
