Founded by the Etruscans, it was part of the league of the 12 cities which opposed themselves to Rome until 263 when it was destroyed by this. The name "Orvieto" derives from "Urbs vetus" (old city) this lets presuppose the existence of a " New city" somwhere else. "Urbs vetus", it certainly was an important etruscan centre, how many recoverys on the Rock testify, probably neglected and left without a name in late republican and imperial periods. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Rock of Orvieto, easily defensible, offered new possibilities of installation to who looked for a protected place, the episcopal see was transferred here by Bolsena. The city of which possession Goths and Byzantines fighted, became successively seat of the longobardic duke, even if it didn't take officially part of the patrimony of San Pietro, it found itself in any case under control of the papal power. The city began to amplify the own dominions: obtains, fighting victoriously against Siena, Viterbo and Perugia, the possession of territorys in Valdichiana and in Val di Lago, transitorily also on the acess to the sea near Orbetello. Its naturally was the rival of Siena, Florenz, of which it took the denomination of the communal charge. After the dominion of the seigniory, Orvieto is definitively incorporated in the Papal States (1540).
