La storia della cittą

Founded by the from Chiusi coming Etruscans with the name "Clusium Novum" on the fourth island of lake Trasimeno. Because of its important position, it was always in controversy with the neighbouring cities. Contested between Toscans and Perugians, the castle was destroyed and rebuild several times and finds its definitive state only in the middle of the XIIIth century when Federico IInd from Svevia had it demolished and rebuild by a military monk-architect, Elia from Cortona, according to a scheme of a central fortress in a territorial defensive system. He named it "Castello del Leone" (Lion's castle), which was then transformed in "Castillonen". Notwithstanding numerous siegs, it has never been conquered. The village Castiglione del lago is completely fenced with wall, makes total reference to the number 3: three entrance gates, three roads, three town squares, three are the sides of the donjon and also three churches. After it was brought back under the domination of Perugia, it became the fief of the Baglioni family. In 1550, Pope Julius III granted it to his sister, Giacoma dal Monte, who was the mother of Ascanio della Corgna, and in 1563, Ascanio was bestowed the title of Marquis of Castiglione and of Chiugi. Castiglione del Lago was made into a duchy in 1617 and this era marked its brightest period. This is demonstrated by its intense agricultural activity as well as by the extensive city-planning works, whose most important aspect the construction of Palazzo della Corgna, a palace designed by Vignola.
