Founded in 1134 b.C. by the mythical Amiro with population of Etruscan, Roman and Umbrian origins,took the name Ameria. It was a blooming roman community and Cicerone mentioned it in the Pro Roscio for its abundantly fertile ground. Suffers plundering during barbaric invasion until it was nearly destroyed in 548 by the Goths of Totila, successively (726) Gregorio II subjected it to the Church, not long after from 730 to 740 it was occupied by Liutprando to return again under the pontificate of Zaccaria in 742. Free Commune, it suffers siege by Federico Barbarossa in the XIIt century and was theatre of harsh intestine fights between Guelfic and Ghibellines, Keeps its autonomy until 307 when it definitively subjected itself to the Church.
