Ancient Umbrian centre, densely populated even in roman ages. Its most ancient territorial division go back to the IVth century vulgar era, it took its name from a roman soldier martyrized in 303 because christian . Placed between the two poles of Borgo Sansepolcro and Città di Castello ancient Melischiano - San Giustino, already "castrum" in roman epoch, it found itself for the autonomy in such an appetible as dangerous strategic position. Already in 1109, rose on the hills looking over Pieve, Castello di Castiglione, over which Federico 1St Barbarossa boasted rights of property and patronage. After the destruction of the castle at the end of the 1200's, it becomes a fortalice of defences over the valley of the Palazzo dei Dotti, involved in the same events of the neighbouring Città di Castello and destroyed before the mid-1400's by fights between the seigniorys of the valley. At the end of the century, the tifernate magistrates decide to rebuild the fortalice and to transform it into a fortress. The work was con signed for financing to Nicolò Bufalini, a wealthy man of property of the area. The events of the Risorgimento (renaissance), tie San Giustino ulterioly to Città di Castello, both occupied by the troops of Manfredo Fanti. Together they were annexed to the Italian Kingdom on the 11th september 1860. In the territory of Cospaia (republic from 1440 to 1826), in 1575, italian's first tobacco was cultivated with seeds brought from Spain by the abbot Nicolò Tornabuoni.
