| History Mount Subasio has always attracted those dedicated to meditation, work and prayer. In the centuries prior to the birth of St. Francis, various religious founded numerous hermitages that were later abandoned and one of them was the Eremo delle Carceri, which immediately attracted St. Francis. The term "Carceri" means retreat or hermitage, and this is where St. Francis and his brothers sought refuge when they felt an extreme need for solitude. The Poor One's first excursions there took place between 1206 and 1210. Subsequently, he stayed there for a longer period of time between 1210 and 1211, followed by numerous visits. |
